DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities have released the name of a 17-year-old girl who died after being thrown from an ATV Friday in Davidson County.

Maria Daniela Garcia, of Kernersville, was riding in the Polaris Ranger with a 23-year-old woman outside a home on Charlie Road off Abbotts Creek Church Road when it hit a small embankment around 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 6, according to Sheriff David Grice.

The embankment caused the ATV to roll over and then land on the teen, who had been thrown from the vehicle, Grice said.

Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

No other injuries were reported.

Deputies said the teen borrowed the ATV from a neighbor to learn how to drive, although the 23-year-old was driving at the time of the accident.

Charges are not expected, deputies said.

The home where the wreck occurred has a Kernersville address, but is within the Davidson County line.
