ASHEVILLE, N.C. — An Asheville man says a broken storm drainage pipe caused a giant sinkhole to open up in his backyard.
Tom Sforza tells WLOS the hole, which is 12′ deep and and 20′ wide, opened up due to a broken pipe that runs from the street to the back of his property.
Sforza says his backyard slowly eroded away during rain storms when water from the street would rush through the broken pipe.
City engineers tell WLOS the pipe was installed by a developer in the 1920s. Since it’s on private property, they say it’s not their responsibility.
