GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro’s transportation department claims all Gate City Boulevard signs will be in place by the end of this summer, just in time for the Wyndham golf tournament.
Adam Fischer, the transportation department director, said that the delay mainly has to do with the longer length of the street’s name.
“It's more of an involved process than the average person might see because actually, with Gate City Boulevard, it's a longer name which means the signs are bigger,” Fischer said. “NCDOT actually has to make sure that the structures that are holding up the signs can hold a bigger sign. It’s not so much the weight of the signs as the wind load on the signs.”
More than 300 street signs have been replaced with the new Gate City Boulevard name by the city. The first street signs to be replaced were in areas where Greensboro sees the highest traffic of visitors.
“That was the first priority was I-40 right in the immediate area of the coliseum and they had those in by the ACC women's tournament. They're looking to put in the next round of signs before the end of the summer before the Wyndham golf tournament,” Fischer said.
