GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) — A Gastonia woman has been charged with felony child abuse in the death of her infant daughter earlier this year.

Shana Alexis Davidson, 23, has been accused of smothering her daughter on March 18.

Authorities say the woman was intoxicated when she fell asleep on the couch with 2-month-old Shaelyn Gabriell Davidson.

Gastonia Police Sgt. Gene Weaver says the woman awoke and discovered her daughter was not breathing.

Police waited until medical tests were complete to charge Davidson.

It was not clear if Davidson has an attorney.
