GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities said a man driving in Gaston County died after a deer crashed through his windshield and caused his vehicle to run off the road and explode.

The Charlotte Observer reported that 69-year-old Charles Ervin of Bessemer City died after he hit the deer on Highway 279 near Long Shoals Road.

State Trooper J.D. Thornburg said Michele Carswell was traveling east in a 2002 Honda Accord and hit the deer after it ran into the roadway.

Thornburg said the deer was knocked into oncoming traffic and then collided with Ervin’s 2011 Hyundai SUV. Investigators said Ervin’s car went off the roadway and caught fire.

Authorities said there are no charges pending in the accident.

Troopers said deer-related accidents increase this time of the year because of breeding season.
