LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — Several people were taken to the hospital following a 10-vehicle crash Wednesday morning that involved a gasoline tanker carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel, WIS reported.

Just before 6 a.m. the tanker hopped over Interstate 26 into the eastbound lanes and caught fire, Highway Patrol officials told WIS.

Ten vehicles were involved in the crash, including two tractor-trailers. Some of the vehicles caught fire. The fire spread off the west side of the interstate. Firefighters put out flames that were threatening a nearby residential area.

A Richland County deputy’s vehicle was struck when he stopped to assist with a crash on the highway when his vehicle was struck. The deputy was not injured.
