DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — One hundred free life jackets were given away to children at Pebble Beach at High Rock Lake Saturday in Davidson County.
The state wildlife commission and the Coast Guard teamed up for the event to remind children and their parents the importance of water safety.
Officials said that more than 120 people younger than 15 drowned in either a pool or lake last year.
“Drownings are a big deal in North Carolina,” said Karen Baldwin, who participated. “We rank among the top ten in the nation for boating fatalities, so we want to encourage everyone to play it safe on our lakes.”
Sheriff’s departments in Davidson, Montgomery, Rowan and Stanly counties said they will be increasing patrol of lakes this summer to ensure safety.
