GREENSBORO, N.C. – Recruiters with the Houston Independent School District in Texas will return to Greensboro November 18th, hoping to lure more local teachers to the Lone Star State with higher pay.

“Honestly it`s been everything I was promised and a little bit more,” said Philip Baker, one of several dozen teachers who left North Carolina this past summer to teach in Texas.

Baker was lured with better pay – almost double what he was making as a history teacher at Dudley High School.

He now teaches English at a school in the Houston suburbs.

“Here we have an abundance of technology … every bit of technology that you can use in the classroom is a benefit,” he said.

Teacher turnover rate in North Carolina rose in recent years topping out at 14.3%, but recent data shows turnover is leveling off down slightly last year to 14.1%, according to state data.

While some of that turnover is linked to family and career changes, many are moving out for the simple reason of an increase in pay.

The average teacher in North Carolina starts out making around $30,000.

School districts in Texas are offering jobs around $50,000, allowing new teachers like Baker to live, work and grow without financial worries.

“I’m now looking at purchasing a house and putting roots into this community,” Baker said. “Hopefully being here for the next 40 or 50 years.”

The Houston Independent School District will be at the Courtyard Marriot on West Wendover Avenue, November 18th, 4-7 p.m.

On-the-spot job offers could be made for teachers certified in bilingual education, career and technical education, secondary science and mathematics as well as special education.
