WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Four people forced their way into a Winston-Salem home early Monday morning while a couple was sleeping and robbed them at gunpoint, according to police.

Winston-Salem police said it happened in the 4200 block of Fern Place at about 1:45 a.m.

The men allegedly came into the home armed with a shotgun and stole two small safes from the home, then left on foot. Police said the victims were a couple in their 50s.

A K-9 unit tracked the robbers to Merriwood Drive, about a block away, police said. The unit lost the scent after that.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information can call police at (336) 773-7700 or Crime Stoppers at (336) 727-2800.
