FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A 31-year-old Green Beret from Michigan who served two tours of duty in Iraq has been killed in fighting in Afghanistan, according to WTVD-TV.

The Pentagon announced Saturday that Sgt. 1st Class Michael A. Cathcart died Friday in Kunduz Province from small arms fire.

The Bay City Times reported that Cathcart enlisted in the Army in 2001. It says he served in Iraq in 2003 and 2005 and volunteered for Special Forces in 2007.

Cathcart skated with the Carolina Hurricanes during a special practice at Fort Bragg last season.

“We are deeply saddened to hear that we’ve lost Sgt. Cathcart,” said Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes. “People throw around the word ‘hero’ too easily sometimes, but Mike Cathcart was a true hero. He proudly served our country and died protecting our safety and freedom. We are grateful for that day we were able to spend with him and the impact he left on our team.”
