WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The medical director and the lead psychiatrist at the Forsyth County Jail denied in court that they were negligent in caring for an inmate who died in 2013.

In a wrongful-death lawsuit filed July 31, the wife of Dino Vann Nixon said her husband’s death was due to “withdrawal from benzodiazepines in the settling of coronary artery disease” and an abnormal enlargement of the heart.

The lawsuit alleges that jail officials refused to provide several prescription drugs, including Xanax, to Nixon and failed to pay attention to Nixon’s medical condition. Nixon died Aug. 5, 2013, four days before he was scheduled to appear in Forsyth District Court on the drug trafficking charges. He had been arrested July 11, 2013.
