WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A former R.J. Reynolds High School teacher and coach has been arrested on charges of committing a sexual offense with a student.

Lloyd Derrele Mitchell, 32, of Clemmons, is charged with sexual offense with a student and indecent liberties with a student, according to police.

On June 1, detectives with the Winston-Salem Police Department began investigating a report of Mitchell having been involved in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student.

Detectives said they discovered that Mitchell had engaged in sexual intercourse with a female student at Reyonlds High during the 2012 school year. The student became pregnant by Mitchell, police said.

Mitchell was suspended without pay from Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools on June 8, pending an investigation. At the time of his suspension, Mitchell was a teaching assistant and the boys’ basketball coach at West Forsyth High School.

On Wednesday, Mitchell turned himself in to Winston-Salem police. He was given a $25,000 unsecured bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 2.
