ORLEANS, Mass. — A 22-year-old college swimmer drowned during a lifeguard tryout on Cape Cod Saturday, WCVB reported.

Jack Jakubek was remembered by his college swim coach for his passion and work ethic.

“It’s a true loss for us all, but I can say that we’re all better off for having had Jack in our lives and having known him,” Brian Tobin, his swim coach at SUNY Cortland said.

Jakubek worked as a lifeguard at Nauset Beach in Orleans last summer. He was planning to do the same thing this summer, but drowned during a tryout for summer lifeguard jobs.

Jakubek, who had graduated from SUNY Cortland two weeks ago, went under water while trying to swim to a buoy. Several rescue teams responded to the scene. Jakubet was found off shore by divers at 9:23 a.m., and efforts to resuscitate him failed.
