NEW BERN, N.C. — A former assistant basketball coach is accused of sex offense against a child in New Bern.

Deputies say 29-year-old Charles Phillip Drake of River Bend was arrested and charged Sunday with sex offense against a child.

His arrest is the result of an ongoing investigation by the Craven County Sheriff’s Office.

According to WNCT, a tip from a concerned citizen about underage drinking, involving multiple kids about a week ago, led deputies to Drake.

That’s when investigators learned there was more than underage drinking involved.

A spokesman for the Craven County Sheriff’s Office says the non-consensual sex is believed to have happened at the suspect’s mother’s house in the Brices Creek area.

WNCT reports a spokesperson for The Epiphany School in New Bern says Drake wasn’t rehired a few weeks ago for performance-related reasons.

Drake is in the Craven County Jail under a $500,000 bond.

Additional charges are pending.
