WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Fire investigators are still trying to determine what caused a string of 10 fires along I-40 in between Peters Creek Parkway and Hanes Mall Boulevard on Saturday.

Seven firefighter units from Winston-Salem and six from Forsyth County worked together to battle the brush fires.

“We have low humidity which means that brush undergrowth which is what was burning today could be easily lit continue to burn an easy to spread,” said Captain Kevin Maness of the Winston-Salem Fire Department.

Authorities said it took crews about 50 minutes to put the fires out. They said no buildings were at risk of burning and no one was hurt.
