WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Firefighters responded to the scene of a house fire in Winston-Salem on Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out on the 130 block of Scott Hollow Drive. The home belonged to Winston-Salem Fire Department Capt. Gary Poplin.

Poplin’s wife and son were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Poplin was next door when the fire started.

Battalion Chief Charlie Hampton said it took firefighters 40 minutes to get the flames under control.

The cause is still under investigation but firefighters believe it could have started near the living room couch.
