ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A fight is brewing at a Virgina high school over photos of a pregnant teenager being included in the school’s yearbook, the Washington Post reported.
Yearbook editor Anderson Bonilla wanted to show student life as it really is. Two pages are dedicated to the lives of teenage mothers who attend the school.
“We want to show the real world of what Mount Vernon is,” said Bonilla. “We wanted to report something worth knowing.”
But a photo of one of the pregnant teens baring her stomach has resulted in a fight between student leaders and school officials.
According to Bonilla, Principal Esther Manns has said she will not allow the photos in the yearbook.
Bonilla told the Washington Post he believes the students are on firm ground in publishing the photos and cited a U.S. Supreme Court case.
School district policy says principals can censor material they believe will cause a disruption or that is “harmful to juveniles. ”
