GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The expression that bigger is better when it comes to business is not necessarily true.

For North State, headquartered in High Point, faster is where it’s at.

On Thursday, the company pulled coaxial cable wire from below a neighborhood near The Friendly Center and replaced it with fiber. Fiber offers gigabit Ethernet, television and voice services.

“At this juncture in most of the Triad there is only one fiber Internet provider and that is us,” said Royster Tucker, CEO of North State.

North State started laying fiber several years ago in High Point. They’ve begun expanding into Greensboro in select neighborhoods. According to Tucker, tens of thousands of Piedmont houses and businesses are already signed up for fiber.

Tucker said the plan is to offer fiber in some Winston-Salem neighborhoods by the end of the year.

“We're very excited to bring ultrafast Internet connectivity and super HD television and fiber based business products to other parts of the Triad,” said Tucker.

Count Dan Elder as one potential customer excited about the possibility of faster Internet service.

“It's just so much faster I mean I like to play games, personally, so I need a really fast really stable connection so I don't want things to be dropped,” said Elder.

He also sees competition among cable companies like AT&T and Time Warner Cable as a positive thing for the Piedmont Triad.

“Anytime I have trouble with my Internet right now -- and it's down for more than an hour -- I look online to see if any fiber is available in the area so when I call them back and say, ‘I'm going to switch to fiber if you don't do better,’” said Elder.

Elder may now be able to back up that threat without moving.
