Federal court orders NC lawmakers to redraw districts, hold new General Assembly elections in 2017

A federal three-judge panel on Tuesday ordered the North Carolina General Assembly to redraw 28 House and Senate districts, WRAL reports.

The order says the districts must be redrawn by March 15, 2017.

The order also requires a special primary and general election to be held in 2017.

The General Assembly released the following statement:

The North Carolina Democratic Party said in a statement Tuesday Night:

“The North Carolina Democratic Party applauds the federal court’s order to redraw these gerrymandered legislative districts. Our elected officials should fairly represent our state, and redrawn districts will help level the playing field.”
