It appears the FCC is recognizing that WiFi access should be available to everyone – and it could be free of charge.

According to the Washington Post, the FCC is considering buying back spectrums from TV stations that would allow for “super WiFi,” that could blanket the country with wide-ranging, highly-penetrative networks.

While internet service providers are furious about the proposal, large tech companies like Google and Microsoft are both reportedly excited about the opportunity.

This free WiFi network would work similarly to how cellular networks work now. You would have constant connection to the internet no matter where you were, and while you can easily achieve this through LTE. However, WiFi could offer faster service at no cost.
