JOANNA, S.C. — It was on the corner of Milton Road and Main Street corner where people in Joanna said a father was teaching his daughter a lesson.

“A couple customers came in asking if I’d seen the little girl on the corner with the sign, and I said, ‘What sign?'” said Pandora Oliver.

Oliver works at the Royal Food Store where a witness snapped a photo of the man making his daughter hold up a sign about how she plagiarized a school paper.

Oliver said, “I asked him, Can I read the sign?’ and he said, ‘Yeah, sure, go ahead.’ And I read it, it said ‘I lied about my grades, and stole someone’s school work.’

Oliver said she wasn’t surprised because she’s seen many people post photos to Facebook about their kids learning a lesson in public. But other people who saw the father and daughter said it was humiliating.

“She couldn’t look us in the eye. She kept looking away, and she was crying and shaking,” Katherine Williams said.

Williams and her mom drove by and saw the father and daughter, and they pulled over to speak with them.

“He said, pretty much, that she’s not your child. It’s none of your business and just told us to leave, and if we had a problem to call the police,” Williams said.

The Lauren’s County Sheriff’s Office came out and asked him to move along. Corporal Christy Johnson with the Sheriff’s Office said she made sure the child was not in any danger or being hurt. A report was not filed, and she said he told her he was within his rights.

“I can understand the parent being angry because you don’t want your child to lie or to cheat, but there are other ways to tell them that’s wrong then make them cry and be humiliated like that,” said Williams.

But witnesses said he wasn’t being mean, and the father said he was just teaching her a lesson.
