The wreck of Old 97 happened 110 year ago Friday in Danville, Virgina--an event musicians still sing about today.

Vernon Dalhart recorded, 'The Wreck of the Old 97" in 1924, and it became the first million-selling record in country music history and went on to sell more than six million, when artists like Ricky Skaggs and Johnny Cash recorded versions.

The song tells the tale of what happened to Southern Railways train number 97, when it came down the three-mile slope into town and tried to make the curve in the track where it should've been going about 10 miles an hour, as it passed over the Dan River.
