Family sues Kmart after grandmother cuts her leg on store shelf and later dies

STREATOR, Ill. — The family of an 88-year-old woman is suing Kmart after she cut her leg on a shelf and later died from an infection.

NBC Chicago reported that Dolores Thompson was driving a motorized scooter and cut her leg on a metal shelf while trying to get around boxes.

It reportedly happened Nov. 15, 2012. On Dec. 2 of that year, doctors found methicillin resistant staph aureus – or MRSA — in her wound.

Thompson died of MRSA sepsis in April 2014, according to the lawsuit. The suit asks for $200,000 in damages and court costs.

The store where Thompson was injured is now closed.

A Sears Holdings Corp. representative – Kmart’s parent company – said the company had not received or reviewed the suit as of Friday morning. They said they could not comment on it.
