EDEN, N.C. -- Families practiced target shooting and gun safety for Rockingham County’s first “Firearms and Your Family” event on Sunday.
Children as young as four participated in the practice shooting which took place in a controlled environment.
Organizers said the earlier you can teach children the right way to handle guns, the less likely there will be gun related accidents.
The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office partnered up with local gun clubs to host the event at the Willow Oaks Plantation in Eden. About 200 people participated.
A coaching staff from the North Carolina Wildlife Commission showed the participants target shooting, archery and skeet shooting.
Organizers said the event was not just for recreational fun, but also about gun accident prevention.
