For about 15 minutes on Thursday, Facebook took over the internet.
For a short period of time, a bug within Facebook’s ubiquitous embedded widgets redirected millions of visitors on other websites back to Facebook. From about 8 p.m. ET to 8:15 p.m. ET, some of the largest websites in the world including CNN and The Washington Post were inaccessible.
The bug only affected those logged into Facebook. Non-Facebook users and those not actively logged into Facebook were not affected.
In an e-mail to NBC, Facebook said:
“For a short period of time, there was a bug that redirected people from third party sites with Facebook Login to Facebook.com. The issue was quickly resolved.”
