WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Little 6-month-old Hazel's eyes light up with wonder in her playroom. It's just down the hall from her home for now, at Brenner Children's Hospital. Hazel and her parents have lived here for practically her entire life.
Hazel was born and it seemed she was perfectly healthy until she had a seizure at 12 days old.
"She has a kidney condition that requires her to have three-hour infusions twice a day to keep her alive," said her mom Maria, who lives in Trinity. "We'll be here until she's 22 pounds and then she'll have a kidney transplant and we can go home for good."
Living in a hospital is challenging, but the couple is ever so grateful for the staff at Brenner, especially the child life specialists, who come up with creative ways to help families with long hospital stays cope.
"Nurses fight over who gets to take care of her, who gets to help that night," said Maria.
Helping families like this is what #ExtraMile4Brenner is all about.
FOX8 is teaming up with Brenner on a social media campaign to show people here in the Piedmont how fortunate we are to have a hospital like Brenner so close by. Join us! Come up with a fun idea of your own, maybe walking an extra mile or doing a few more pushups and post about it on social media with the hashtag #EXTRAMILE4BRENNER. Each day you do it, text 71760 with the word “KIDS” and donate an amount of your choice to Brenner.
