FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — A Forsyth County grand jury indicted Derrele Mitchell, a former boys basketball coach at West Forsyth High School, on charges that he had sex with a female student at Reynolds High School and got her pregnant.
The indictments came down Monday.
Mitchell, 32, of Forest Oak Drive in Clemmons is facing charges of felony sex offense with a student and taking indecent liberties with a student. Mitchell had worked as a media assistant and head boys basketball coach at West Forsyth. The incidents are alleged to have occurred between February and April 2012 when he was the girls varsity coach at Reynolds High School. The alleged victim in the case was an 18-year-old student, according to arrest warrants. Mitchell was 29 at the time.
State law says that school employees such as teachers and coaches can be charged with a felony if they have sex with a student and they are at least four years older than the student.
