ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Food pantries are typically stocked during the holidays, but one in Rockingham County has temporarily closed due to lack of food.

Now the Red Cross food pantry in Rockingham County, the only one in the county open 4-5 days a week, may not have enough food to last the week.

Many shelves stay stocked around the holidays because people tend to donate more in the spirit of the season. The surplus usually lasts into the new year.

According to a release, “The Lord’s Food Pantry” has temporarily closed.

The closure is now affecting the Red Cross pantry.

With the loss of extended unemployment benefits, more new clients are expected in the coming months.

The Rockingham County Chapter of the Red Cross is the only one in the Heart of Carolina Region that has a food pantry and therefore is the only one that takes food donations.
