CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Elon football player Demitri Allison died this afternoon after falling from a residence hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, according to Elon Dean of Students Smith Jackson.
Allison, 21, of Cornelius, died this afternoon after falling from Morrison Residence Hall, Jackson said, citing law enforcement.
He had left the Elon campus yesterday and his teammates, friends and family asked police to look for him because they were concerned for his well-being and emotional state, Jackson said.
Allison was a junior wide receiver on the Elon Phoenix football team.
"The death of any student is devastating to our community, especially in situations like this, and we want to reach out to friends and acquaintances who knew Demitri. The loss of a classmate, friend and student reminds us that the life of each person in our community is precious. This loss is particularly painful for the Phoenix athletics family, and the football team’s chaplain is providing counseling for the players and staff," Jackson said.
“Everyone associated with Elon athletics is devastated,” said Athletics Director Dave Blank. “Demitri was a talented young man with a bright future who was loved by his teammates. We mourn his loss deeply and we pray for his family and loved ones.”
Elon’s counseling staff and the chaplain’s staff are available, Jackson said.
Anyone who would like to talk about their feelings of loss or concern for others may contact Counseling Services at (336) 278-7280 or the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life at (336) 278-7729.
Counselors are available after hours on call by contacting Campus Safety and Police at (336) 278-5555. The Student Life administrator-on-call may also be reached at (336) 278-5555 at any time.
A "Gathering of Friends" in Allison's memory will be held Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Rhodes Stadium, Elon University announced Wednesday night on Twitter.
