STOKES CO., N.C. -- Deputies said an elderly man riding a bicycle was hospitalized after being hit by a car Friday morning in Stokes County.

Billy Midkiff, 80, was riding east on Coon Road around 8:15 a.m. when deputies said he tried turning around right in front of a car.

Troopers said Midkiff was thrown from his bike after being hit at an estimated 40 mph.

Midkiff was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and was in critical condition as of 5 p.m. Friday.

Charges could be filed against the driver.

Trooper Terry Dunn said bicycles are treated as vehicles, so although the driver moved over to give the cyclist more room, he may be charged with passing in a no passing zone.
