MONROE, N.C. — A South Carolina man has been charged after he struck and killed a North Carolina man who was cutting the grass at a church.

Troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol told The Associated Press that Don Lowery, 73, of Union County, died Saturday after he was struck by a pickup truck. Lowery was cutting the grass at the Holy Band of Inspiration Church, where his wife is a pastor.

Ronald Sutton, 37, of Lancaster, S.C., is charged with death by motor vehicle caused by reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.

Troopers say Lowery was about 30 feet off N.C. 200 south of Monroe when he was hit.
