WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Employees at a Winston-Salem Family Dollar were shot during an armed robbery Sunday night.

Officers were called to the Family Dollar located at 4404 Old Rural Hall Road just after 8 p.m.

Employees told police that the two suspects entered the business through the front door. One stayed by the front door as the other suspect, armed with a pistol, approached employees and demanded money.

As the employees were complying, multiple rounds were fired, injuring two employees.

“These are some cool people, I [come] here every day, I come here every day to buy something,” said Darius Simmons, who lives in the area. “They didn’t put up a fight, they gave up the money and stuff -- so really -- that’s really a shocker for me.”

The injuries to the employees were considered non-life-threatening and everyone is expected to be OK. The store manager told FOX8 one of the employees remained in the hospital Monday.

“There’s a pregnant girl that works here,” Simmons said. “She could have been here last night. Who’s to say she would [not have been] shot?”

The armed suspect took an undisclosed amount of money and both fled the scene on foot.

“I just hope somebody answers for that, because that’s wrong,” Simmons said. “I might even come up here when they’re about to close and make sure they’re alright.”

The store was closed on Monday for cleanup and repairs. The store manager says they will reopen on Tuesday.
