Dozens of dogs rescued from a South Korean meat market are getting a fresh start in the U.S.

Humane Society International and Free Korean Dogs rescued the 31 animals.

The animals are in Maryland for a quick stop before heading to shelters in North Carolina, where they will be placed for adoption.

"The fact these animals are being slaughtered and treated cruelly, it's just mortifying,” said woman.

The dogs got their freedom after Korean authorities shut down the farm where the animals were living.

Officials say the facility was operating without a license.

There is no current word on where specifically in North Carolina the dogs will be headed to.
