COOPERSTOWN, N.D. (WDAY) — There is a special bond between a farm boy and his dog. And Tuesday night near rural Cooperstown, North Dakota, everybody is talking about 3-year-old Carson and the dog who saved him.
Carson Urness walked away from his farm-yard Monday night. A search team of nearly 200 showed up, and firefighters on 4-wheelers finally found him under his protective dog, Cooper.
Carson Urness is all about Green. A John Deere Digger and a little dirt and he’s happy. But what whirlwind 24-hours its been. It started went the 3 year old wasn’t coming in from playing outside in the farm yard.
“And then, 7:30 rolled around I figured he’d start getting hungry sometime,” said Courtney Urness, Carson’s Mom.
His mom Courtney searched. Scoured the farm yard, then got that feeling something was wrong. She called 911.
“I lost it I guess you could say. Yeah, it was hard,” Courtney Urness said.
Soon more than 200 volunteers showed up. Family, friends, a search plane and search dog.
“You think of the worst, but then I knew Cooper was gone. If anyone was going to find him, they’d just have to find Cooper,” Courtney Urness said.
But the family quickly realized the family dog Cooper was also missing. They hoped he was with Carson.
And about 2 a.m., came the news. Carson was found safe, a mile away. With Cooper the farm dog on top of him.
“Great dog. I just didn’t realize that he would actually be keeping him warm and protecting him,” Courtney Urness said.
And Carson has been pretty quiet about the ordeal until he shared something today with his mother.
“He came up to me today and he goes ‘Mom I was really scared, but Cooper laid on me. He kept me warm.’ And I said what about your feet? And he said ‘no, not those,'” Courtney Urness said.
The rest of the story: Cooper the farm dog was saved by this family. Left as a puppy on the road to fend for himself. Today, it’s all about payback story. A dog, his boy, a safe return home. The end.
Carson was taken to the hospital to be checked out. As you can see, he’s fine.
