RALEIGH, N.C. – Authorities said a mental patient was shot and killed after stealing the patrol car he was being transported in Sunday morning in Raleigh.

WRAL reported that Wake County officials said a 35-year-old male mental patient being transported by a deputy tried to overpower the deputy while driving at around 9 a.m.

Officials said the unnamed patient was not handcuffed and was riding in the front seat at the deputy’s discretion.

Deputies said the patient proceeded to get out of the car, so the deputy followed him. Authorities said a struggle ensued and the deputy slipped in mud. They said the patient jumped in the driver’s seat and took off in the patrol car.

Deputies said the patient drove eastbound on I-540, and shortly after passing Glenwood Avenue, the suspect lost control and crashed off the side of the road. The patient then reportedly fled into the woods.

Officials said shots were fired, and as a result the suspect is dead. Officials have not said who fired the shot that killed the patient, but they have said two officers were involved.
