DENTON, N.C. – A Denton police officer shot and killed a dog that attacked him, according to Denton police.

Police said it happened Thursday when a Denton police officer was asked to do a welfare check on a person in the 100 block of Hill Top Lane.

A man at the home opened his door and the dog came out and attacked the officer, according to police.

Police said the dog lunged at the officer and bit the officer three times. The officer shot at the dog and accidentally shot himself in the arm in the process.

The officer was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The dog was killed by the officer.
