Death investigation underway in Surry County

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — A death investigation is underway in Surry County, according to Sheriff Graham Atkinson.

At about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Surry County Central Communications received a call of a shooting at 4120 Haystack Road, Mount Airy. When Officers arrived, they found the homeowner, 71-year-old Richard Clint Holmes dead inside the residence of an apparent traumatic head injury.

The original caller was on the scene when officers arrived, according to Atkinson. The caller was a close associate of Holmes, who told Investigators they had come by the residence to check on him.

The Surry County Sheriff’s Office along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the death.

The body is being sent to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for autopsy.
