BALDWIN PARK, Calif. — A California girl and her dog who were both born deaf are overcoming adversity and learning how to communicate together through sign language.

The dog’s name is Walter and just like Julia, he was born deaf, KTVU reports.

“When I first held Julia, since she really couldn’t hear my voice, she would smell my neck – and when I first held Walter he did almost the same exact thing,” Julia’s  mom said. “I remember just looking at him and I knew that he was meant to be ours.”

Julia has taught Walter several signs, including the movements for water, food and of course, sit.
