Irving Fenner Jr., 23, allegedly shot officer Brackeen Saturday morning while he was searching for Fenner, who was wanted on outstanding warrants. Nearby officers heard the gunshots and found Brackeen with a wound to the chest. He died at Carolinas Medical Center Monday morning.
Fenner, who had been on the run since the incident, was arrested in Rhode Island early Wednesday morning. Both Shelby police and federal investigators were expected to be in Rhode Island on Wednesday to question him.
Since the fatal shooting on Saturday, six additional people have been arrested.
Casey Fenner of New York, Jolisa Peeler of Rhode Island and Deitra Morris of Shelby were each charged Tuesday night with accessory after the fact of first-degree murder. Fenner’s uncle Corry Peeler and his girlfriend Hope Wyman were charged with harboring a criminal. Ashley Hamrick was charged with harboring a fugitive for lending aid to the suspect after she knew he was wanted.
The investigation is ongoing and officials say Fenner will be brought back to North Carolina to face charges. They don’t know how long the process will take.
A funeral for officer Brackeen will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday.
