Crews to resume search for missing Martinsville boater

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Crews will resume their search for a missing Virginia boater early Wednesday morning.

Joseph Reed Sink, Jr., 30, of Martinsville, went missing Tuesday when his canoe capsized in the lower part of the Smith River.

Dispatch received a call at approximately 6:30 p.m. about a boating accident on the lower section of the Smith River just below the Martinsville Hydroelectric Dam.

Sink and a 27-year-old man put in the river on a two-person canoe around 6 p.m. at the bridge by the intersection of Rives and Rivermont Heights roads.

Shortly after launching into the river, the canoe capsized and both men went into the water.

The 27-year-old made it to the bank of the river and Sink was last seen in the water. Sink’s friend then got a passerby at 500 Frith Drive in Ridgeway to call 911.

Shortly after receiving the initial 911 call the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and the Ridgeway Rescue Squad arrived on scene.

A large-scale search and rescue effort was immediately put into motion by the Henry County Public Safety Department.

The search has included the banks of the river, airborne checks of the river and two rescue boats on the river.
