DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — Firefighters from multiple agencies are battling a large fire in Davidson County at a garbage and recycling center.

Crews from 17 departments were called to the fire at North Davidson Garbage Service and Recycling at 4157 Old 52 at about 7 p.m. Friday.

Three-quarters of the building was engulfed in flames, according to Larry James, director of Davidson County Emergency Services.

It remains uncertain if anyone was inside the building or what caused the fire.

A photo by FOX8’s Allison Smith shows thick smoke in the air about a half mile from the scene.

A fire hose could be seen running all the way down Winston Road to feed water to fight the fire.
