DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — Hundreds of bowed heads and closed eyes gathered around the football field at Ledford High School Friday to send a strong message to Davidson County School officials who no longer allow students to pray before games using the school's PA system.
Students, players, and staff locked hands and stood together, reciting the Lord's Prayer before kick-off.
But school officials say using the school's PA system for prayer violates state law.
Instead, they're letting students hold a moment of silence or pray to themselves.
Pastor Mark Hollar of Abbot's Creek Missionary Baptist Church said that isn't good enough, so he met with other local pastors to fight back.
"Our parents and our students have the freedom to be here," Hollar said. "And, they will pray."
South Davidson High School also held a similar prayer Friday night.
