Coach arrested after alleged fight with student at Eden school

EDEN, N.C. — A Morehead High School cross-country coach was arrested after he was allegedly involved in an altercation with a student on Monday, Rockingham County Schools confirmed.

William Christian McLawhorn, 37, of Martinsville, Va., is charged with simple assault.

The incident reportedly happened in the school gym and involved a 16-year-old student.

Following an investigation, which used surveillance and cellphone videos, McLawhorn was arrested.

Rockingham County Schools released the following statement:

“This unfortunate incident, is an isolated incident that we take seriously. Mr. McLawhorn was contracted to coach athletics, and after this incident, has been removed from his coaching responsibilities. All staff and coaches, paid and volunteer, go through a thorough employee screening process.”

Bail for McLawhorn was set at $1,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 27.
