Clemson student from NC dies after fall from cruise ship mast

MIAMI — For the second time in a week, Clemson University is mourning the loss of one of their own, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.

Kendall Wernet, 20, of Arden, N.C., died of blunt force head trauma after a fall from the radar deck of a cruise ship in Miami on Monday.

According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, “a 20-year-old male passenger had climbed the ship’s forward mast when he fell the approximate height of two decks.

“City of Miami and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and transported the victim to Ryder Trauma Center where he succumbed to his injuries.”

The Carnival Cruise Corp. released a statement saying that Wernet entered a restricted area and climbed up onto the ship’s forward mast before falling from the radar deck.

Wernet had been on an awards cruise for Macomb, Mich.-based Student Painters. A group of five or six climbed up on the platform as the Carnival Ecstasy returned to port.

Wernet graduated from Roberson High School in in Arden in 2012 with a 4.4 grade point average.
