CHAPEL HILL, N.C.  –A 20-year-old woman was killed by a falling tree in the 300 block of Chapel Hill’s Franklin Street as strong thunderstorms moved through the area Thursday evening, according to WTVD.

Orange County Emergency Services said the woman was pinned under the large tree that was brought down by the storm’s powerful winds around 5:20 p.m.

She was rushed to the UNC Hospital Emergency Room, where she later died.

UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp identified the student as Xuezhou Nan, a senior from Cary. She was also known as Julia, Thorp said.

“It is so hard to lose one so young, especially in such a terrible, random and tragic event,” Thorp said in a statement. “I hope that all of you, Julia’s fellow Tar Heels, will keep her family and friends in your thoughts at this sad time.”
