Initially, temperatures will start above freezing, but may fall as the precipitation moves in. Don't be surprised if snow falls at a higher rate at times after sunrise.

Any snow accumulation will be confined to grassy surfaces and elevated areas like car tops.

An upper level disturbance, paired with a strong coastal low, will intensify off the coast of North Carolina later today, producing breezy conditions in the Piedmont.

Winds will increase to 10-15 mph overnight as skies clear and temperatures tumble to the lower 20s. Wind chills by daybreak are expected to be 12 degrees to 16 degrees -- very uncomfortable for kids at the bus stop.

Sunshine takes over Wednesday but high temperatures stay well below the average, topping out in the mid-40s. Our normal high is 64, so this is a significant cold air mass for this time of year.

Expect a recovery in temperatures by the end of the week, but this warm-up will be accompanied by wet weather. Scattered showers are likely both Friday and Saturday.
