Van struck by train in Mebane, woman killed identified

MEBANE, N.C. -- Emergency officials are investigating a train wreck involving a van Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened around 12:45 p.m. at South Fifth Street and Center Street.

One person was killed in the accident when the Amtrak train collided with a woman's Dodge Caravan that was stationary on the tracks.

The deceased has been identified as Doris Miles Pinnix, 80, of Burlington.

Pinnix was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The crew and passengers on the train were not injured.

The train left Durham and was heading to its next stop of Burlington. At the time of the incident, 58 passengers were on the train, according to an Amtrak spokesperson.

Amtrak said the 58 passengers will be taken by bus to their destinations between Raleigh and Charlotte.
