SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Only a small spear gun stood between a diver and a great white shark off the California coast.

Tyler McQuillen, 22, was swimming when he felt an unexpected jerk and saw one of his flippers float past him. The diver then realized he had been bitten by a large shark – and he got it all on video.

In the video, you can see McQuillen become disoriented as he looks down at his foot. That’s when the shark quickly comes into view and he notices that it’s a great white shark.

As he begins swimming away from it, he jabs it with his spear gun and is able to make it away.

The bite left a mark across two of his toes and he plans to reenter the ocean whenever he heals.
