BURLINGTON, N.C. — A Burlington woman has been sentenced to at least 17 months in prison for running over a 10-month-old baby.

The Burlington Times-News reported that Stormie Vancil, 28, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired for hitting Melissa Flynn and her baby Aubrey outside Alamance Regional Medical Center last year.

The mother was pushing her baby in a stroller when Vancil ran over the child in April of 2014, according to prosecutors.

Authorities said Vancil hit them as they were walking toward the hospital entrance. The child was run over and the mother was knocked onto the vehicle’s hood and thrown off, according to the paper.

The child and the mother both survived, but were critically injured. The child’s recovery was described as “remarkable” by Alamance County District Attorney Pat Nadolski.

A judge sentenced Vancil to 14 to 26 months with 415 day’s credit for time served. Prosecutors said she’ll remain imprisoned for several more months before being released for nine months of supervision.

Vancil reportedly had several prescription drugs in her system at the time, including oxycodone.
