Brother, sister face animal cruelty charges in Rutherford Co. puppy mill raid

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A brother and sister have been charged after Rutherford County Animal Control raided a home on Ferry Road earlier in June and seized 52 dogs.

Police say the sibling duo admitted to owning dogs at three locations in Rutherford County and one location in Cleveland County.

Dean Edward Upchurch, 50, is charged with 41 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. He was arrested and his bond was set at $7,000 secured.

Barbara Ann Upchurch, 45, is charged with three counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty and one count of instigating or promoting animal cruelty.

All the dogs are being cared for thorough the Humane Society of Charlotte.
